World Environment Day
The United Nations spreads worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances public and Government attention and action through the World Environment Day , commemorated every year on 5th day of June.


Through this remembering, the day aims to give more personalised touch to environmental issues, and empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development, besides promoting an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues.The day promotes engagement and partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.


The World Environment Day 2012 is hosted by the Republic of Brazil and the theme is Green Economy: Does it include you?


UNEP defines a Green Economy as 'one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.' The Green Economy is driven by public and private investments that reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resource efficiency,and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services.


In Hong Kong, over 300 housing estates have participated in "World Environment Day 2012 - Green Home Action", organising various environmental activities to encourage their residents to go green.The Green Home Action aims to enlist support from housing estates to drive home green messages and encourage residents to adopt green living practices


World Environment Day 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the event which was first established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.An annual event since 1972, World Environment Day , is dedicated to stimulate global awareness of the environment. The United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances action through the Day.
